Many of us know someone who is getting ready to go back to school. Let’s keep them safe!
Remember if your child walks to school:
Always walk on the sidewalk, if one is not available then walk facing the traffic. Before you cross the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming. Never dart out in front of a PARKED car. If your child needs to adjust that backpack, then stop in front of the house not the driveway. We are all in a rush and some drivers pull out of their driveways without looking. Practice walking to school with your child.
Riding the bus to school:
Practice going to the bus stop with your child to teach them the safety tips. Make sure your children stand six feet away (or 3 giant steps) from the curb. If your child and you need to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the side of the
road until you are 10 feet ahead of the bus. You always should be able to see the bus driver, and the bus driver always should be able to see you.
After school safety, remember to talk to your children about who is allowed in the home. Determine a plan about answering the phone and door. Many times it is better to tell the doorknocker that you are busy versus remaining silent, as burglars are scanning what homes are best to break into.

Case Study Business / Residence: Health care business
1. Commercial Client with existing access control and video surveillance upgrade:

• Client had 10 year access control and video surveillance system installed by ADT. The customer is interested in upgraded service and system.
2. What did the customer or client do about this?

• The customer contacted several security vendors to entertain quotes and proposals. They provided basic outline of needs and tour of facility. There were 4 existing analog DVR connected to approximately 50 cameras. There were 15 card readers connected to 4 x 4 door Kantech controllers operating on a older Windows server. 8 of the readers were proximity and 8 were fingerprint.

• The client chose our solution. The primary reason is that we were willing to upgrade their existing access system software and did not require them to purchase new readers, controllers, software, etc…just updated software and additional 4 exit readers. The resulted in a significant cost savings to the client as well as enabled OnGuard to do the work with less down time. During the quotation process we proposed multiple solutions which enabled the client to have greater flexibility and choice.
3. What did you do?

• We were fortunate that the manufacturer had a training certification class occurring while the bidding process was occurring. Because none of the other competitors were apparently offering a software upgrade and this would enable the client to save money while upgrading and meeting their requirements, it seemed like a viable opportunity to send 2 techs for certification. Thankfully the investment paid off as this one reason we apparently won the order.

• We ran into a few snags and a savings in the process. The snag was the finger print readers were not compatible with the new operating software on the server. The bonus that our techs in conjunction with the manufacture’s support realized we did not need another controller for the swipe out readers and we could interface them into the existing controllers, saving the client money. Thus the issue with the readers was offset by the saving on the controller evenly.

• The job was completing according to the allotment of time; 2 techs for 2 days, 1 tech a 3rd day.

4. What did you deliver?

• We were able to compete the job on budget and in time. The client’s IT department and director (the Specifier) was helpful and involved in the process along with the General Manager (the Authorizer).

5. Did this work?

• Time will tell how effective the upgrade will be for the client. It seems like it shall work just fine.

6. What are the measurable benefits for the customer or the client?

• The system has been upgraded and future proof for 5-10 years.

• The solution saved 50% cost verse reinstalling most of the hardware from scratch.

• Both systems we able to be installed in less time, approximately 50% reducing disruption to work flow while get up and running faster.

7. Within a b2b context, how did this impact the customer or client’s own customers?

• The client being in healthcare and will have greater controls, reports and security in regard to keeping their clients data secure and complying with heath care rules and procedures.

• The client will be able to ascertain quicker and with more certainly where their staff is and present with the use of access control and surveillance.

8. What can the customer/ client now do in terms of its own market segment that it couldn’t do before?

• The client has an easier and much better path to upgrade their security cameras a needs and budget permits the NVR / DVR connects to their existing analog cameras while allowing them to add higher resolution IP Digital cameras in the future without having to change head end equipment.

• We were also able to add better remote viewing capability including app to see cameras providing multiple uses including alarm verification, deliveries, customer service, etc.

9. What are the future opportunities for the customer/client?

• They have a platform that allow future expansion without having to replace the head end.

10. What experience and capability do you now have as a result of this work?

• We have several new experiences that will enable us in the future including Kantech Certification, Installation and dealing with some new configurations. Working with a quality IT professionals is always a growing opportunity.

OnGuard was able to attend this recent ISC West Expo this month. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn and see new equipment and connect with vendors and partners. OnGuard is pleased to announce we are installing the LaunchPort. It is an innovative product that holds an iPad (soon Android tablet) to the wall magnetically, while charging the unit.
What make this so nice is the easy access to app driven systems that we install and maintain, such as, and Video Surveillance DVR. And of course, it provides all the normal applications and features you would expect once your iPad is WIFI connected to the Internet.

The old saying, “If it seems to good to be true, it probably is” will never go out of vogue.
One on my pet peeves in my industry are companies that claim to over a DEEP discounts because ‘they are in the area’, or ‘if you post our security alarm sign in your yard’, or the latest I noticed was a popular review company that offers ‘deals’ because you buy through them. When they actually receive a commission and the ‘deals’ are not ‘special’ at all.
Who can REALLY offer 66-89% off and stay in business IF it was legit, while paying a ‘marketing fee’? NOBODY. Consumers are not getting a deal after all. But rather when they : 1) Have good credit 3) Sign a monitoring agreement and 3) Are a homeowner. This is common and required all the time and that is what it takes to get a ‘deal’.
So I say, don’t fall for misleading advertising. I am not saying these companies don’t have low prices but rather the so called ‘deal’ is nothing special after all.

Crime Prevention is about lessening risk, managing it. It will never be 100%.
Security is only as good as it’s weakest link.
1) PREVENT (Make unattractive to intruders and thieves, deter, don’t leave out the honey in plain sight,)
Signs – Alarm (50% of the battle is the deterrent), Beware of dog, ‘Don’t mind the dog, be aware of the owner’, address visible, (show ones in box)
Note on a home I saw a few weeks ago: “Luther, I went to get more ammo before we go hunting, be right back. Make yourself at home. I left Apollo and Zeus out of their kennels.”
Fences – Hard to climb, requires effort – lazy, chain link best – visibility,
Locks – properly installed by reputable locksmith, dead bolts, ck screws in strike plates, 3” into the jam – bite into the stud, keep spare keys locked up – box, electronic growing, solid core doors, security / iron doors,
Lighting – around perimeter, focus on entry points, recommend photocell dawn to dusk, motion an option, interior on timers,
Other – TIP: big boots (show), Home looked lived in and occupied (mail, newspapers, curtains/blinds), big dog bowls (show), eliminate ladders and things burglars can climb on, keep shrubs and bushes cut back so doors windows are visible, glass block for basement windows
2) ALERT (Pre-alarm, low level notification)
Drive Alert – detect vehicles and foot traffic coming up the driveway
Motion Lights – Good for drawing attention to possible intruders, can broadcast a message.
Video – camera around perimeter and entries can be viewed on all tv’s and monitors
Peep Hole – important to see who it at your door, but for them NOT to see you or in.
Dog – Their bark can alert you and deter an intruder
TIP: Never ignore someone at your door
3) DETECT (High level alarm notification and response)
Alarm – part of A.L.L., should be set up and designed around your lifestyle, when intrusion detected the siren alerts 1) you 2) intruder 3) n-bor / passerby (with exterior)
Auto Alarm – many built, aftermarket, GPS tracking
Patrol – Police, n-hood patrol – associations
4) DEFEND (Neutralize imminent threat)
Self Protect – self defense training – martial arts, Escape Plan
Safe Room – specific area in your room that is hardened and/or hidden. Master bedroom with solid door and better locks, basements – hidden doors, good for bad weather too!
Safes for valuables including cash, guns, jewelery, pics, hard drives, etc…keep hidden when possible and always bolted and secured.
TIP: Don’t put valuable jewelry in a box, too easy to haul way.
Keep spare car keys locked up and yours in a safe place.
Weapon – handguns, shotguns, dog, pepper spray, stun guns, knife, baseball bat (closet)
TIP: wasp spray (show)
Legal – defending the intangible – traditional and PPL
ID/Credit – one you most precious assets, worth protecting – chk Insurance, PPL, credit cards – need active monitoring and effective resolution when a breach is detected.
5) CAPTURE (Apprehend, prosecute and incarcerate)
Police / Prosecutor – 1st choice most power and free
Private Investigator – if you need assistance go the extra step
Video Surveillance – can be a valuable tool, important to have a good recorder in a safe place with proper cameras placement and design.
6) RESTORE (Recover or replace assets and ‘peace of mind’)
P&C Insurance – reputable company, check Moody’s, agent who explains and is there
Contractor – when damage is done, need a qualified responsive contractor / check Angie’s List
Counselor / Spiritual – the most important things are invisible, for another day’s discussion
Legal – sometimes the law is actually on your side
TIP: video / image and inventory household belongings, keep copy off site, professional service available such as Hartman Inventory.
